This weekend a special event was held at Fort Clark Springs--The Last Tattoo of the Buffalo Soldiers. Fort Clark was established in 1852 as one of a chain of forts protecting the border with Mexico and the lower road to California. It was all but abandoned during the Civil War, but by the early 1870's it had grown to become the largest military installation in Texas. Generations of soldiers served at Fort Clark including the Buffalo Soldiers of every historic black regiment in the Army. This weekend the surviving Buffalo Soldiers (there are only 4) who served at Fort Clark were invited to attend the dedication of a Congressional Medal of Honor plaque. Twenty-one recipients of this medal served at Fort Clark.

There were several different activities this weekend where you could meet and visit with these men. Today there was a little parade around the historic district which concluded with the dedication ceremony. The color guard for the parade was made up of air force personnel from Laughlin Air Force Base outside of Del Rio. It was really an honor to meet these men and to hear them talk about their experiences.

This afternoon the sun came out and the temps reached the low 70's. Since we didn't have time to walk this morning, we decided to enjoy the warm weather and walked around the back roads of the fort. A quiet evening was spent at home watching the Olympics.
